Znanstveno-fantastična fantazija snimljena u pseudodokumentarnom stilu u kojoj izvanzemaljac objašnjava kako su pobjegli s Andromede na Zemlju te kako su ljudi pokrenuli svemirske misije u potrazi za naseljivim planetom, međutim, bila je to jednosmjerna karta bez povratka.

Koristeći NASA-ine snimke svemira Herzog postavlja alternativnu povijest američkih svemirskih misija. Snimke su arhivske, dijelom pokrivaju posadu u interijeru svemirskog broda Galileo koji je 1989. lansiran u svemir, a dijelom prekrasne snimke svemira i Zemlje koje su praćene neobičnom i sugestivnom glazbenom podlogom nizozemskog čelista Ernsta Reijsegera i senegalske pjevačice Mole Sylle koja glasom evocira sjećanje na domorodačke izumrle kulture.

Konceptualno snažan "Divlji modri beskraj" stremi k eksperimentalnom, a u cijelom filmu Herzog nije niti jednom posegnuo za CGI rješenjima, štoviše kao jedan od principa stvaranja upravo je potpuni izostanak kompjutorske grafike.

U ulozi izvanzemaljca naratora nastupa Brad Dourif koji je s Herzogom radio na nekoliko projekata, "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans", "Sine, crni sine", "Scream of Stone".
