Smešten u Međuzemlju, film prati grupu hobita, vilenjaka, ljudi, patuljaka i čarobnjaka koji osnuju Družinu. Oni kreću na zadatak uništavanja Prstena Jednog kojeg je načinio Gospodar tame Sauron.
