Plejof je zapravo životna priča legendarnog izraelskog košarkaškog trenera Ralfa Klajna.
Postao je nacionalni heroj u svojoj zemlji pošto je dva puta uspeo da s Makabijem osvoji
titulu klupskog prvaka Evrope krajem '70-ih godina prošlog veka, što je jedan od prvih
međunarodnih sportskih uspeha Izraela. Međutim, nakon prihvatanja ponude košarkaškog
saveza Zapadne Nemačke da preuzme njihovu reprezentaciju, Maks postaje nacionalni izdajnik,
a žena i majka odbijaju svaku komunikaciju s njim. Takođe, nalazi se na meti medija koji
potpuno zapostavljaju sportsku stranu njegove odluke i preispituju njegove političke stavove.
Nailazi na otpor tima, a posebno svog kapitena, čiji je otac nemački heroj s Istočnog fronta.
Paralelno sa sportskom pričom, Maksa progone i duhovi prošlosti, pa odlazi u stan iz koga je
'40-ih godina pobegao s majkom. Tamo upoznaje Turkinju Deniz i njenu prkosnu 13-godišnju
ćerku koje su u Nemačku došle u potrazi za mužem i suprugom koji je nestao.
