Dobrodušni Stew Smith pošten je i skroman njujorški novinar kojem su pravila profesije
i osobno dostojanstvo uvijek na prvom mjestu. Kad ga urednik Conroy pošalje da istraži
"vruću" priču o preljubu u bogataškoj obitelji Schuyler na Long Islandu, beskrupulozni
odvjetnik Grayson Stewa odmah pokuša podmititi s 50 dolara da zataji podatak da je obitelj
jednoj djevojci za otkup određenih ljubavnih pisama platila 10 tisuća dolara. Pisma je
djevojci slao lakomisleni Michael Schuyler, a Stew se, prethodno odbivši mito, već istog
dana uspije domoći šest pisama. Kad mu sutradan mito od 5 tisuća dolara ponudi Michaelova
sestra Ann, Stew i to odbije. Stew postaje svjestan da ga Ann izuzetno privlači, ali ne zna
da je u njega tajno zaljubljena njegova romantična kolegica Gallagher. A sve će se dodatno
zakomplicirati kad se uskoro vjenča s Ann, te kad ga ona odluči uvesti u svoje društvo
bogatih snobova.
