Kafkovska satira o absurdnosti birokratskih postopkov je obenem tudi režiserjevo posvetilo mojstrom nemih filmskih komedij.
Po smrti izumitelja, ki se je domislil stroja za množično izdelavo spomenikov kubanskega pesnika in narodnega heroja Joséja Martíja, se pokojnikova žena in nečak izgubljata v neskončnih labirintih absurdnih birokratskih postopkov. Prizadevata si pridobiti dovoljenje za izkop izumiteljevega trupla, kajti pokopali so ga s sindikalno člansko izkaznico v žepu, brez katere pa vdova ne more do njegove pokojnine.
