Cousin Bette (1998)

Baron Hulot (Hugh Lawrie) potrošio je obiteljsko bogatstvo na niz ljubavnica od kojih je posljednja poznata zabavljačica Jenny Cadine (Elisabeth Shue) u koju je ludo zaljubljen. Nakon smrti baronove žene, rođakinja Bette (Jessica Lange) preuzima brigu o kućanstvu i njihovoj kćeri Hortense (Kelly Macdonald) koja je zbog svoje mladosti i ljepote u Parizu na glasu kao najpoželjnija udavača. Iako ima bogate prosce, Hortense se odbija udati bez ljubavi. Bette slučajno pronalazi mladog poljskog grofa (Aden Young) koji se pokušao ubiti i njeguje ga do ozdravljenja. Budući da on pokazuje umjetničke sklonosti Bette postaje njegova zaštitnica i pomaže da njegove umjetnine pronađu put do kupaca. Pritom se sasvim neočekivano on zaljubljuje u Hortense i ženi se njome. Slomljenog srca, ogorčena i uvjerena da je baronova obitelj kriva za njenu tugu i usamljen život, Bette se odlučuje osvetiti te spletkama dovodi zaigranog umjetnika u naručje Jenny Cadine, čime izluđuje i Hortense i barona Hulota...

Film Cousine Bette snimljn je prema istoimenom Balzacovom romanu iz 1846.g. U središtu priče usamljena je i nesretna žena koja zadovoljštinu pronalazi u spletkarenju protiv vlastite obitelji. Priča je zanimljiva i puna preokreta, a karakteri pronicljivo i inteligentno opisani i oživljeni.

Jessica Lange stars as Cousin Bette, a poor and lonely seamstress, who, after the death of her prominent and wealthy sister, tries to ingratiate herself into lives of her brother-in-law, Baron Hulot (Hugh Laurie, and her niece, Hortense Hulot (Kelly MacDonald). Failing to do so, she instead finds solace and company in a handsome young sculptor (Aden Young) she saves from starvation. But the aspiring artist soon finds love in the arms of another woman, Hortense, leaving Bette a bitter spinster. Bette plots to take revenge on the family who turned her away and stole her only love. With the help of famed courtesan Jenny Cadine (Elisabeth Shue) she slowly destroys the lives of those who have scorned her.
