Opis:

Film je snimljen prema istoimenoj drami Lillian Hellman iz 1940. godine, koju je adaptirao Hellmanin partner Dashiel Hammett, koji je značajno izmijenio tekst.

Njemački odbjegli inžinjer Kurt Miler i antifašist, zajedno sa svojom američkom ženom Sarom i djecom, prilikom posjeta SAD postaju predmetom ucjene rumunjskog grofa povezanog s nacističkim režimom.

'Watch on the Rhine' je snimljen dijelom i zato što je politički angažirani predložak imao uspjeha na Broadwayu, ali i zato što je njegov sadržaj služio u propagadne svrhe, odnosno bio u skladu sa službenom politikom SAD nakon ulaska u drugi svjetski rat. Za adaptaciju je angažiran Hellmanin partner Dashiel Hammett, koji je značajno izmijenio tekst. Snimanje su obilježile svađe među glumcima i članovima ekipe, često vezani uz različite političke svjetonazore, ali i kontoverze oko toga treba li se uloga Sare, koju je tumačila Davis, smatrati glavnom ili sporednom.

Film je doživio dobar uspjeh, a Lukas, kome je to bila jedna od rijetkih uloga pozitivaca u tadašnjem dijelu karijere, je nagrađen Oscarom za najboljeg glumca.
