Na vlak za Škotsku se ukrcaju mlada žena Vivian Vedder sa lijesom
njene pokojne majke, lady Margaret Carstairs vlasnica slavnog dijamanta
Zvijezda Rodezije i sin lady Margaret, Roland Carstairs.
U istom vagonu vlaka se nađu inspektor Lestrade, Holme, Watson i njegov
prijatelj major Duncan-Bleek kojeg su sreli na vlaku.
Holmsa je unajmila lady Margaret da čuva dijamant kojeg su već pokušali
ukrasti za vrijeme njenog bivanja u Londonu.
U kupeju ubrzo nađu mrtvog Rolanda kojeg je neko ubio dok su večerali,
