    Film je baziran na praškoj legendi o Golemu, biću iznimne snage,
    stvorenu od gline da bi pomogao potlačenom židovskom narodu
    u 16. stoljeću za vladavine Rudolfa II.


    U Pragu u XVI. stojeću rabin Loew iz gline stvara čudovišnoga Golema,
    udahnjujući mu život ne bi li spasio Židove od pogroma. No, rabin ne može
    kontrolirati snažna, takorekuć neranjiva glinenog 'čovjeka bez duše'.


    Vizualno privlačan klasik ekspresionizma najpoznatiji je film glumca i režisera
    Paula Wegenera (1874–1948), zasnovan na židovskim praškim legendama,
    prethode mu Golem (1914) te Golem i plesačica (1917) uticao je na kasnije
    horore i znanstvenofantastične filmove.
    Prizorom golemog čudovišta od gline koji na rukama kroz grad nosi nježnu djevicu,
    vjerojatno je inspirirao glasovitog King Konga, snimljenog u Hollywoodu 1933.
    Tamo je karijeru nastavio Karl Freund, snimatelj Golema i jedan od majstora
    hollywoodskih horora tridesetih godina.
